The Earth is getting hotter, and the oceans are absorbing even more heat. In 2025, the oceans absorbed an estimated 23 zettajoules of extra energy, which is roughly half as much again as the 2021 figure. That's like 7.6 billion cups of hot tea every second, or almost one cup for every person on the planet. This extra heat is the physical effect of the trillion or more tonnes of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases we've added to the air since the Industrial Revolution.
