The world of Subnautica 2 is about to become a little more immersive, thanks to the upcoming Early Access 1.1 update. While the game's developer, Unknown Worlds, has made it clear that killing fish is off the table, they've listened to player feedback and made some intriguing changes to enhance the overall experience.
One of the most notable improvements is the enhancement of creature flinches. Now, when you strike a creature with the Survival Multitool, you'll get a clear reaction, a flinch, before they flee. This adds a layer of realism and helps players understand the impact of their actions. It's a small detail, but one that can make a big difference in the player's sense of agency and connection to the game world.
"This update is all about making players feel more in control and giving them a better sense of the mitigation options available when dealing with predators," says Anthony Gallegos, the game's creative director. "We want players to feel empowered, even if they can't directly kill the creatures."
The update also introduces improvements to the Sonic Resonator, which now has a clear stunned state effect on creatures. This visual and auditory feedback loop adds another layer of depth to the game's combat system, making encounters more engaging and strategic.
"The stunned state is a great addition, as it allows players to control the flow of combat and gives them a chance to assess the situation," Gallegos adds. "It's a subtle change, but one that can make a big impact on how players approach encounters."
Beyond creature interactions, the update also focuses on improving the overall gameplay experience. Blight encounters have been refined to provide a smoother transition from passive to aggressive states, reducing the element of surprise and giving players more control over the timing of attacks. Wrecks now offer more puzzle-solving opportunities, adding an extra layer of challenge and exploration.
"We want players to feel like they're truly exploring and discovering new things in this underwater world," Gallegos explains. "By adding more depth to the gameplay mechanics, we hope to encourage players to engage with the environment in new and exciting ways."
As for the future of Subnautica 2, the team has big plans. The upcoming 1.2 update will introduce multiplayer features, allowing players to communicate and revive each other, adding a whole new dimension to the game. And later this year, the Early Access 2 update will bring a host of new content, including a new region, creatures, vehicles, and story progression.
"We're excited to continue building upon the Subnautica 2 experience and providing players with new and engaging content," Gallegos concludes. "As a small team, we're dedicated to listening to our community and delivering updates that enhance the game's core pillars."
While the inability to kill fish may be a point of contention for some players, Unknown Worlds' focus on player feedback and continuous improvement is a testament to their dedication to the game's success. With these updates, Subnautica 2 takes a step forward in creating a more immersive and engaging underwater adventure.
