In the world of job hunting, a new phenomenon is emerging, one that is causing employers to question the authenticity of candidates and their abilities. With the advent of AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT, job seekers are turning to artificial intelligence to gain an edge, often with disastrous results.
The AI-Induced Hiring Paranoia
Imagine a candidate who seems brilliant during an interview, only to reveal on the job that their confidence was borrowed from a chatbot. This is the reality that many employers are now facing, leading to a new form of hiring paranoia. Managers are left wondering if they've evaluated a genuine candidate or a convincing simulation crafted by software.
"It's so much less efficient," says Rich Braun, a partner at Delphi-US. "We have to kiss even more frogs to find that prince."
The Rise of AI Cheating
According to Gartner data, almost half of job applicants are now using AI at some point in their job search. While some use it to polish resumes or write cover letters, others are taking it a step further. A significant number are using AI to generate text for writing samples and answer assessment questions, and an alarming 13% admit to using chatbots in real-time during interviews.
Herval Freire, CTO at Telepatia, calls this 'teleprompting,' and the tell is often a candidate's eyes darting across the screen, reading their answers.
Ethical Gray Areas
For many candidates, the ethical boundaries are blurred. In a tough job market, some justify their actions by reasoning that they'll have access to chatbots on the job, so why not use them to get the job?
However, this raises concerns about the authenticity of the candidate's skills and abilities. Caroline Ogawa, a director at Gartner, notes a rise in 'regrettable hires,' which she attributes to over-reliance on AI during interviews.
"These are things that are putting the thumb on the scale for candidates," she says.
The Cost of AI Deception
The costs of such deceptions are not just financial, but also impact productivity and the time spent on hiring processes. Filling a role typically costs around $1,300, and that's before considering the lost productivity and time spent on onboarding and potential replacements.
Companies Adapt Their Hiring Strategies
Companies are adapting their hiring processes to combat AI-assisted cheating. Some are requiring in-person tests, proctored like the SAT, or sending candidates cameras to ensure full visibility during virtual interviews. Others are investing in AI-detection software that tracks keystrokes and eye movements.
Target Corp, for example, explicitly states that candidates must rely on their "personal understanding and judgment" during interviews, without AI assistance.
The Future of AI in Hiring
While some employers are drawing hard lines against AI use, others are taking a more nuanced approach. Mohit Bhende, co-founder of Karat, believes invasive countermeasures create an adversarial interview environment.
"For job seekers navigating an already miserable market, being presumed a fraud merely adds another indignity," he says.
As AI continues to evolve, the challenge for employers is to find a balance between leveraging its benefits and ensuring the authenticity of candidates' skills and abilities.
